Kid-O Matching Shades of Color Puzzle Review
This is actually a very sophisticated puzzle that can be enjoyed by many ages.
I got this puzzle because my daughter (18 mos.) was getting very frustrated with her other puzzles. She didn't have the understanding yet to properly adjust or turn the shaped pieces to get them to fit into her puzzles. So I figured with a round puzzle she would have success every time. She enjoyed it immediately.
Now at over 2 yrs she still prefers this puzzle over her others. It is important to note that every time she uses this she has success and a satisfactory experience. The play value she gets seems to me to be a bit more creative than other puzzles. She plays with color combinations and really doesn't seem to tire of the different choices. She knows her colors, and sometimes understands the concept of matching them, especially when I work with her. But the shading is actually quite subtle and it will probably take her a while to master that aspect. I even have a hard time matching them on occasion.
Also her 5 year old half-brother enjoys this puzzle. He returns to it often as well. He doesn't like jigsaw puzzles, or really any puzzles (prefers TV) but this one for some reason is fun for him.
The puzzle is wood and actually very light weight. The knobs are smooth wood and slightly larger than the standard plastic ones on a M&D puzzle. The paint is good quality and hasn't chipped from the occasional nibble.

This is a beautiful puzzle and very well made. Matching the shades is challenging, but putting the circles in the spaces is easy, so my 2 year old can put the pieces in and my 3 year old can match about 25% of the shades. I gave it 4 stars because I think it will be a narrow window where the toy is engaging for the shade matching AND putting the circles in the spaces. Also it's hard to explain why the pieces are not in the right spot to my child who is just starting to get the color concept down. The rectangular puzzle with color gradation makes more sense to both of them.
